A long long time ago our ancestors made holes in the sides of their humble abodes to let in light. Windows derived from those. They added some means to close them to protect against wind, weather, and more. Shutters descended from those. Windows grew into impressive designs, their functions remained, but they also evolved into impressive structures to be seen.
Time has marched on. We can create light and provide air conditioning. Our dependency on the functions of windows has passed, shutters are no longer needed for protection.
These “windows” are but decorative. The walls behind are solid. At night they are even illuminated from the outside. Just for the looks of the building. Amazing what our progress has wrought!
